Gränsfors have developed a special range of tools for use in log cabin building and wood sculpting. These axes and tools have been designed in collaboration with expert woodsmen. Traditional tools have provided a template for the models that Gränsfors Bruk now produces, but they have been modified and developed in partnership with specialists and professionals to meet the demands of today’s users. Each type of axe is designed for a specific function, hence the considerable variation in axe head design, grind and handles.

Broad Axe Ref: 4801, 4802, 4803, 4813, 4821, 4823

Broad Axes are designed for squaring logs and planks, traditionally when building a log house, used for making joints and timber and plank hewing. They vary greatly depending on the shape of the head and edge and the angle of the handle.

  • Cutting edge 7” / 175mm
  • Head weight 3.5lb / 1.61kg
  • Handle length  19.5” / 500mm

4801 Straight handle double bevel - the axe blade is centred in relation to the head and eye and ground on both sides of the edge (knife grind).

The axe is also available ground only on one side (scissor grind available as left or right bevel) the side of the head that does not have a ground bevel face is flat The flat side of the axe is more ‘aggressive’ and is used when the log has to be really smooth, for example when planing structural timbers. The other side is used when the log is to have a slight wave pattern and thus does not need to be as smooth.

4802 Straight handle left bevel

4803 straight handle right bevel

A version is available, where the axe blade is slightly angled in relation to the head, allowing the axe to glide along the log, without its eye catching on the log. This also in effect means the axe has an angled handle so the handle and your hands remain at a distance from the timber, thereby minimising the risk of personal injury.

4813 left angled left bevel

4821 right angled double bevel

4823 right angled right bevel

Draw Knife Ref:468

The Draw knife is primarily designed for peeling, shaping and smoothing. It is particularly suited to peeling softwood logs in the preparation of log-building. The blade is bowed up and curved forward in the centre. The hickory handles are set on full-length tangs extending straight out from the ends of the blade.

  • Cutting edge length 11.5” / 290 mm
  • Cutting edge width 1.5" / 38mm
  • Head weight 1lb 5oz / 0.68 kg
  • Handle length 22.5” / 570 mm

Straight Adzes

The Straight Adze is an old Scandinavian axe design with a transverse edge. It is perhaps best described as ‘a chisel you can chop with’. The adze has a wide range of applications. It can be used to square off logs and planks to create a smooth surface, to shape beams and purlins, and to form ribs for boats.

Gränsfors Small Straight Adze Ref:476

It is usually kept for when the user is working close to the log, making a small axe with a shorter handle preferable.

  • Cutting edge 2” / 55mm
  • Head weight 1lb 12oz / 0.8kg
  • Handle length 9.5” / 240mm
Gränsfors Large Straight Adze Ref:477

The large straight adze comes into its own when the user is standing over the log and chopping between his legs. The user can adjust his arms’ length to control the cutting and thus create an extremely smooth surface.

  • Cutting edge 3” / 75mm
  • Head weight 2lb 14oz / 1.3kg
  • Handle length 25.5” / 650mm

Gutter Adzes

The Gutter Adze is a kind of adze with a different cutting edge that is rounded up at the ends. Its area of use is hollowing out timber, for example to make a trough, old-style gutters and notchwork in log-building, for which the rounded edge is ideal. Also used for carving chair seats.

Gränsfors Small Gutter Adze Ref:478

It is usually kept for when the user is working close to the log, making a small axe with a shorter handle preferable.

  • Cutting edge 2.5” / 60mm
  • Head weight 1.8 lbs / 0.8kg
  • Handle length 9.5” / 240mm
Gränsfors Large Gutter Adze Ref:479

The large gutter adze comes into its own when the user is standing over the log and chopping between his legs. In this case, the user stands over the workpiece, legs apart, and leans forward to do the chopping.

  • Cutting edge 3” / 80mm
  • Head weight 3.3 lbs / 1.5kg
  • Handle length 25.5” / 650mm
